Spectrum Health Companies is currently seeking an RN, Executive Director for our direct client in the assisted living home healthcare industry. This is a direct hire-based position reporting to the Regional Operations Manager in the Assisted Living division. The ideal candidate will have at least 4 - 5 years of experience and be proficient in overseeing both clinical and healthcare operation functions required of a successful assisted living environment.

  • Business Acumen & Management Experience  Skilled healthcare management professional with strong problem-solving skills for a wide range of complex business scenarios and highly unpredictable people, process and operations issues.  Demonstrated ability to both oversee nursing operations and quality initiatives, while also being a good leader of people with a demonstrated history of managing, developing, motivating, delegating responsibility, and continuously improving staff. Financial oversight, budgeting, cost control, and revenue optimization.
  • Change Management & Composure - Ability to maintain composure within high change, fast paced environments.  Candidates who describe themselves as flexible and good on the fly, with the ability to quickly shift, re-prioritize, and communicate work to meet the needs of the organization.
  • Organization & Prioritization  Demonstrated ability to stay organized and focused on the highest priorities of the organization within a quickly changing, and fast paced environments.  Will have demonstrated the ability to keep workflow organized in a hybrid, paper tracking, computer system tracking, and survey binder, environment keeping it all together and organized.
  • Communication & Social Awareness  Candidates who have demonstrated ability the ability to clearly and concisely communicate, both oral and written, at all levels within the organization.  Candidates who can quickly assess and understand the specific communication needs of their audience, ranging from limited to no education to the highly educated, able to adjust their communication style and approach to ensure understanding and comprehension.  Must be socially aware of environment, audience, and other situational variables and adjust communication style and approach to meet the communication needs of that unique situation.

What You'll Be Accountable For:

Quality Operations

  • Oversee, direct, and monitor work priorities of five (5) direct reports and their staff: RN, Health Services Manager, Dining Services Manager, Facilities & Maintenance Supervisor, Social Worker, and Life Enrichment Coordinator.
  • Participate in strategic, long term planning, including managerial meetings. 
  • Consistently support the general direction, initiatives, and specific final decisions of the Executive team in all aspects of the business; use influence sensitively to garner cooperation of management and coworkers.  Maintain service excellence.
  • Ensure, through a close partnership with the RN, Health Services Manager, appropriate health care and related services are delivered consistent with care plans. 
  • Ensure, through close partnership with the Dining Services Manager and Facilities & Maintenance Supervisor, that all dining services and environmental needs are managed appropriately in order to provide an enjoyable, safe and healthy environment for all residents and personnel.
  • Meet with the client and family to accurately complete all admission paperwork, explaining the health care plan and client/family responsibilities. Participate in periodic care plan meeting reviews as necessary.
  • Understand the care and service options available to the residents as well as the effort and time required to provide such services. 
  • Monitor client's funding sources to assure that prior authorization is obtained and transferred accurately and timely to the Prior Authorization Department and that the appropriate payors are billed. Assist with collections as necessary.
  • Develop and implement safety programs to ensure the wellbeing of residents, staff and visitor as well as avoiding injuries and financial loss.
  • Actively coordinate the workers' compensation process; prompt investigation of the circumstances; and regular follow-up communication with the injured employee. 
  • Maintain compliance with current county, state, and federal regulations affecting assisted living facilities and related operations. 
  • Supervise and coordinate maintenance of appropriate, accurate and complete documentation of information on clients and staff under your supervision according to agency policy.
  • Actively participate in agency-wide activities and its continuous quality improvement program.  Responsible for evaluating the home care program's level of excellence and implementing process improvement strategies as indicated.
  • Perform other functions as deemed appropriate by the Regional Manager of Operations.

Sales & Marketing

  • Develop and implement marketing strategies to achieve financial stability while providing excellent care and service the residents.
  • Market the wide range of health care services to potential clients and their families.
  • Leverage inhouse Electronic Medical Records system data to identify and suggest additional services and care to residents and their families based on the changing needs of the resident.
  • Coordinate and oversee on-going new resident recruitment activities. 
  • Assist with/support marketing strategies to achieve financial stability through maximum census.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with third parties such as county social workers, hospital discharge planners and others to assist in quality care and referral issues.
  • Network with other community providers ensuring they understand the services and capabilities of the organization.

Financial

  • Participate in the annual clinical & operations budgeting process. 
  • Manage and monitor revenues, expenses and expected vs. actual budget variances on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis. 
  • Regularly provide financial reports and analysis to executive management team.  
  • Monitor budget expenditures with nursing personnel throughout the year.  Adjust staffing levels as needed to ensure an optimized staff to resident ratio.
  • Regularly assess new and existing patients to accurately estimate the required staff for various level of patient care and how that impacts the facility financially.
  • In partnership with the Regional Operations Director, identify and implement new and creative ways to grow revenue while controlling costs maximizing operational profits to achieve the organization's operating and financial objectives.
  • Partner with Health Services, Dining Services, and Facility & Maintenance functions to identify and implement cost savings or revenue generating initiatives.   

Customer Satisfaction

  • Ensure all operations provide services in such a manner to meet or exceed client expectations.
  • Ensure appropriate recreation, social service and spiritual programs exist to contribute to resident awareness, interest, and mental stimulation.
  • Respond to questions and calls from clients, clients' families, doctors, outside case managers, employees, etc., regarding problems, concerns, or general information in a timely manner.

Employee Engagement, Learning, and Development

  • Interview, hire, complete competency assessments, mentor, and coordinate staffing and administrative personnel. Provide on-going guidance and feedback. Regularly evaluate, address and correct issues. 
  • Provide direct and indirect supervision and management of professional and paraprofessional staff; including mentorship programs, mutually set goals and evaluate employees' performance, thereby contributing to organizational and individual growth and development.
  • Develop effective work groups among the staff through use of team building strategies and provide for educational training and programs on pertinent topics. Coordinate and participate in departmental and facility wide staff meetings.
  • Disseminate information appropriately to all staff to ensure communication is at its highest level between management, professional and paraprofessional staff at all locations.

What Qualifications You Need:

  • Candidates with an RN nursing background, and currently Registered in the State of Minnesota is required.
  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in general business administration, management, or finance / accounting. 
  • Candidates will have at least 5+ years of progressive management experience, preferably with working knowledge of adult clinical practice as well as management theory and principles within an Assisted Living and/or home health care environment.
  • Must have 2 - 3+ years of prior supervisory/management experience directly overseeing the work of both licensed and non-licensed staff of 5 or more employees.
  • Prior experience in a position of financial oversight, budgeting, cost control, and revenue optimization is required.
  • Must have experience with annual budgeting, cost control and savings identification, as well as weekly, monthly, and quarterly monitoring of budget to actual in an effort to achieve the organization's operating objectives.
  • Current knowledge of applicable federal, state and local health care regulations plus familiarity with human resource related areas of workers compensation, unemployment, FMLA and progressive discipline.
  • Excellent conceptual thinking skills with the ability to identify and analyze complex and sensitive issues, problems and conflicts and to use independent judgment to make decisions, and to recommend and/or implement solutions. Ability to know when and how to ask appropriate questions. 
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, delegate and accurately follow through on work activities with time constraints and interruptions to meet deadlines as well as to work independently with a minimum amount of direction and/or supervision.
  • Strong communication skills, ability to problem solve, calm under pressure, creative thought process, critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to listen and communicate clearly, fluently and diplomatically orally and in writing in the English language; also, to maintain excellent interpersonal and cooperative working relationships with management, staff and clients.
  • Ability to exhibit desirable and appropriate managerial behavior including integrity, ability to get along with others, team playing, industriousness, leadership, supportive communication, sense of urgency and confidentiality and independent judgment to provide for a cohesive working environment dedicated to achieving the organization's goals.
